Local Wildlife

CoyoteFrom time to time, wild animals, such as raccoons, opossums, armadillos, foxes, bobcats, coyotes, and beavers wander into residential areas. These animals may be dangerous and could cause some destruction, especially if they are rabid. The Sherman Animal Shelter advises citizens not to attempt to capture or trap wild animals without contacting the Animal Shelter first. The Animal Shelter will deliver, bait, and set traps on the citizen's property that is being trespassed by wild animals.

RacoonThe most effective protection from wild animal problems, including rabies, is barriers and discouragement. Remove whatever it is that attracts wild animals to your property. Feed pets indoors if possible or remove outdoor dishes and leftovers as soon as possible. Fence your garden. Vaccinate your pets.

Homeowners are also encouraged to eliminate places that could become a den for a wild animal. Fill in tree cavities, cap chimneys, and seal off attics; but, always make sure a wild animal is not inside first. For any other information on trapping of wild and domesticated animals, contact the Sherman Animal Shelter at (903) 892-7255.
