| The City of
Sherman Development Department administers the City’s Code of Ordinances
regarding Environmental Codes and their effective compliance, in order
to enhance the quality of life and the level of the safety/health for
the citizens of this community. Enforcement of ordinances is intended to prevent and abate environmental nuisances on private property such as open and dangerous buildings, illegal dumping, high grass/weeds, accumulation of trash/junk/debris, stagnant water and others. ![]() Trash/Junk/Debris/Litter The homeowner or tenant is responsible for maintaining their property within the City of Sherman by keeping the property free from the accumulation of trash, junk, debris, outside storage, etc. This includes areas between the curb in front of the house to the center of the alley or the back part of the property. High Grass/Weeds/Vegetation High grass, weeds or vegetation over 12 inches in height is prohibited within the City of Sherman. This includes areas between the curb in front of the house to the center of the alley or the back part of the property, as well as along fence lines, around structures, poles obstacles, and similar structures. ![]() Obstructions A property owner or occupant is responsible for keeping street, alleyways, sidewalks and public grounds clear of obstructions. This includes trimming of trees, shrubbery, vines or other growth which might physically obstruct or visually impair any vehicle or pedestrian traveling on a roadway, alleyway or sidewalk. Open Storage Any item that is not customarily used or stored outside or is not made of material that is resistant to damage or deterioration from exposure to the outdoors cannot be placed outside for more than 24 hours. Exceptions include motor vehicles on improved surfaces, lawn furniture, and landscaping items. Unsecured and Vacant Structures Any owner of any vacant property shall keep the doors and windows of the structure secure and closed to prevent unauthorized entry. Should a property owner fail to comply with this code after proper notification, the City of Sherman will secure the property and bill the owner for the costs.
