Bill Magers
Mayor

Sherman is at a crossroad, experiencing rapid changes that will affect us all. Because the outcome is as important to me as it is to you, I became your mayor in 2005. Together, we are building a high-energy community while maintaining our unique family values; a city with a healthy business mix of entrepreneurs, professors, industry leaders and working folks; the region’s cultural and entertainment hub with a fun, vibrant downtown, and a community of parks, trails and green spaces for all ages to enjoy. I am confident that, working together, we are making that vision a reality.

My family moved to Sherman in 1953 and purchased the house I lived in for most of my life. After an extended illness, my father died when I was 12. My mother raised me while working as an executive secretary. I had my first business at 12, mowing lawns, and have worked ever since. I have an older sister and an older brother, neither of which are in the area. My mother passed away in 1997.

I played football at SHS and Austin College. I earned all-district honors at SHS. At AC, I earned all-conference honors and was one of two four-year letterman in my graduating class. I played on teams that won a district championship at SHS and a National Championship and a Conference Championship at Austin College.

After Austin College, I earned an MBA in International Management from Thunderbird, The American School of International Management. The school is consistently ranked by US NEWS, Business Week and The Wall Street Journal as the top International Business graduate school in the country. I was recruited by Echosphere, now the DISH network, out of grad school becoming the Director of West Coast operations at 27. I returned to Sherman in 1992 and launched my first company, Quest Home Entertainment.

I sold the business to my partners in 1999. In 2000, I moved temporarily to Dallas where I turned around a small IT company that had been caught in the “dot.com” blow-up. My professional career has been spent successfully building and running businesses with annual revenues between $10 – $100 mil. (Sherman’s annual budget is about $50 mil)

In 2004, Angela, my wife, and I purchased a building and launched a Montessori school for children 18 months to 6th grade. Angela has a Masters degree in education from Austin College and runs the day to day operations of the school. I handle marketing, finances and strategic planning. This leaves me plenty of time to attend to civic responsibilities.

I have lived and worked in Sherman, Phoenix, Dallas, and Orange County, CA. My career has allowed me to travel extensively throughout the US, Latin America, the Caribbean and, to a lesser degree, Europe. I speak English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Nonetheless, Sherman is where I call home. I have spent 35 of my 45 years living in Grayson County. Angela and I were married here in January of 1998 at Wynne Chapel on the Austin College Campus. Three of our children were born at Wilson N. Jones Hospital.

We have four boys, Zach, Kennon, Josh and Marshall. Angela and I wanted our children to experience the family values we learned growing up in a small community. We are committed to maintaining these values and the quality of life we enjoy as Sherman transitions to the future.

I am a member of Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce and First Methodist Church, and a volunteer coach for youth sports.
