ISO Rating
Definition The Texas Department of Insurance rates and grades municipalities and fire districts. This rating is then used as a benchmark for insurance companies to set premiums within a geographic area. This rating system is ISO (Insurance Services Office). ISO ratings have been used since 1995. The ratings are from the best at 1 to the worst at 10. A higher ISO rating results in higher insurance premiums.
The rating is the result of an evaluation of each fire district's fire fighting capability and the associated water system. The fire department measurement is 50% of the rating while the water department is 40% and the dispatch area is 10%.
Sherman's rating 1995 - 5 1997 - 4 2002 - 3 The Sherman Fire Department is very proud of the hard work that has resulted in the aggressive lowering of its rating. Over the last few years, the Fire Department has met specific goals that directly effected the lower ratings.
The City of Sherman is currently in an elite group of 54 out of the 2,136 fire communities in Texas. This puts us in the lowest 2.6% ISO ratings in the state. There are 24 fire districts that have the ISO rating of 2, while the ISO rating of 1 has been awarded only to four (4) fire areas.
