MISSION STATEMENT
The office of the City Attorney provides timely and accurate professional
services to the City Council, City Manager, Staff and the city Boards
and Commissions, involving all legal matters of municipal concern.
The City Attorney serves at the pleasure and direction of the City
Council.
FUNCTIONS
The City Attorney serves as legal advisor of, and attorney for, all
of the offices and departments of the City of Sherman and the City
Council. In addition to representing the City in litigation and legal
proceedings before State and Federal Courts and administrative agencies,
he serves as prosecutor in the City’s Municipal Court. The City
Attorney’s responsibilities include drafting or reviewing all
City ordinances, resolutions, contracts, easements, deeds, and other
legal documents, and responding to requests for municipal law information
from citizens. The objectives of the office of the City Attorney are
as follows:
· To provide legal direction to the City Council at all times;
· To keep the City Council well informed and knowledgeable
of legal issues through regular briefings; and
· To oversee the City’s litigation and review all legal
documents.
MUNICIPAL
COURT
Location
The Sherman Municipal Court is located on the second floor of the
Sherman Police Station at 317 South Travis Street, Sherman, Texas.
Judge
The Municipal Court Judge is Curry Vogelsang, and the alternate Judge
is Scott Smith. The Municipal Court Judge shall preside over all court
proceedings, arraign the defendant, hear the evidence, and pronounce
judgment as to the guilt or innocence of the accused; and, if guilty,
he shall assess a fine.
Prosecutor
The Sherman City Attorney is the Chief Prosecutor for the Court. It
is the duty of the prosecutor to prove the City’s case beyond
a reasonable doubt, through the examination of witnesses and other
evidence and to insure that justice is done by providing to the court
any favorable evidence pertaining to the defendant of which he is
aware.
Mission Statement
The City of Sherman Municipal Court is the Judicial Branch of City
government. The Court is organized into two sections, the Judiciary
and Court Administration. The mission of the Judiciary is to provide
fair and impartial justice to the citizens of Sherman. The mission
of Court Administration is to support the Judiciary, assist the public
with competence and patience, and to manage Court operations with
skill and economy.
Jurisdiction
Cases that are filed in Municipal Court include (but
are not limited to) environmental violations, traffic violations,
Class C misdemeanors, and violations of City ordinance.

NOTICE OF CLAIM
FOR DAMAGES
Article X, Section 7, City Charter, City of Sherman,
Notice of Claim states:
The city shall not be held liable on account of any claim for damages
to any person or property unless the person making such complaint
or claiming such damages shall, within one hundred eighty (180) days
after the time at which it is claimed such damages were inflicted
upon such person or property, file with the director of public records
a written statement under oath, stating the nature and character of
such damages or injuries, the extent of the same, the place where
same happened, the circumstances under which same happened, and the
conditions causing same, with a detailed statement of each item of
damages, and the amount thereof, and if it be for personal injuries,
giving a list of any witnesses known to affiant to have seen the accident.
Procedures to follow when filing a claim:
Provide the information required in Article X, Section 7, Notice of
Claim, referenced above, in writing and sign the letter before a Notary
Public and mail letter with the following attachments:
· Two property damage estimates;
· Photographs of damage, if any;
· Accident report, if available;
· Photocopy of Certificate of Title of damaged vehicle;
· Photocopy of medical bills, if any; and
· Doctor’s narrative, to:
