Drinking Water System
Two primary sources supply water for the water system: ground water comes from a system of wells in the surrounding area, and surface water is obtained from Lake Texoma, located approximately fifteen miles to the north. The surface water is processed in a modern water treatment plant prior to entering the delivery system. Well water is treated on-site at the source.

An extensive system of water mains delivers the water to customers within the city and to a few customers in the surrounding area. The system of mains is divided into two major segments. The high section delivers surface water and is primarily located in the northern and western sections of town. The low section delivers ground water, primarily to the eastern and central sections of town. In an emergency, the two segments of water delivery system can be connected.

Wastewater System
An extensive system of sanitary sewer mains collects wastewater throughout the community. This system is separate from the storm sewers that collect run-off during rainy periods and direct the run-off into various creeks and drainage ways.

Wastewater that is collected in the sanitary sewers is treated in a modern wastewater treatment plant located in the southeastern section of the city. The discharge from this plant enters Post Oak Creek and flows eventually into the Red River.

Wastewater Treatment
The City of Sherman operates a wastewater treatment plant which serves the wastewater needs of the Sherman and Howe communities. This facility, Post Oak Wastewater Treatment Plant, is a conventional biological plant providing secondary treatment to domestic, commercial, and industrial wastewaters. Permitted at 16 million gallons per day, the plant provides physical, biological, and chemical treatment for wastewater to remove pollutants, disinfect, and produce an effluent which is suitable and safe for reintroduction back into the natural stream environment. Organic residuals, called biosolids, resulting from the treatment steps at the plant are naturally recycled through a beneficial use program of land application. For more information about the plant, the biosolids program, or to request group tours of the facility, please call the Wastewater Superintendent at (903) 892-7286.

Industrial Pretreatment Program
The City of Sherman operates an active Industrial Pretreatment Program. The purpose of this program is to establish and manage wastewater requirements for industrial users of the Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) - sanitary sewer system and wastewater treatment plant - in accordance with applicable Federal and State laws including the Clean Water Act (33 U.S.C. 1251 et seq.) and the General Pretreatment Regulations (40 CFR Part 403). These requirements are outlined in Chapter 35, Article V. Regulations for Disposal of Industrial Wastes, of the Sherman City Code. The Pretreatment Program objectives are:
• control pollutants which may pass through or interfere with the POTW processes
• improve opportunities to recycle and reclaim municipal and industrial wastewaters and residuals
• prevent endangerment of the health or safety of POTW employees and the general public
• preserve and protect the aquatic environment of local creeks and streams

Wastewater Eligibility Discharge Requirements:
Businesses considering locating in Sherman or existing businesses that have questions concerning eligibility requirements for discharging industrial or process wastes to the sanitary sewer system should contact the City’s Pretreatment Coordinator at 903-892-7256 or Wastewater Superintendent at 903-892-7286 during normal business hours, Monday– Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Laboratory Services
The City of Sherman operates a state-certified laboratory that performs various water and wastewater analytical services for surrounding communities in Collin, Cooke, Denton, Fannin, and Grayson counties. These analyses include bacteriological parameters (total and fecal coliform) as well as several wet chemistry parameters (BOD, COD, pH, TSS, and chlorine residual).

The laboratory accepts samples during normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Should you have any questions concerning the laboratory, please call 903-892-7256 or 903-892-7287.

FAST FACTS

Did you know you can help prevent costly and unsanitary sewer overflows by following a few simple steps? The Sherman water lab’s pre-treatment technicians give these suggestions:

DO

  • Scrape excess grease in a container and dispose of it in the garbage
  • Place food scraps in waste containers or garbage bags for disposal with solid wastes
  • Place a wastebasket in the bathroom to dispose of solid wastes. Disposable diapers and personal hygiene products do not belong in the sewer system
  • Promote the concept of the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

DON’T

  • Pour grease, fats, and oils from cooking down the drain
  • Use the toilet as trash can
  • Use the sewer as a means of disposing of food scraps

Following these simple rules can help prevent clogged pipes and sewer overflows.
